Manual Treatment Techniques
Physiotherapists provide various ‘hands-on’ treatments to help relieve pain and stiffness, and to encourage better movement of the body. Physiotherapy manual techniques at The Wellness Centre (Castle Quay) may include treatments such as Hypervolt Percussion Therapy, Floss Band Therapy and McConnell Institute Taping Technique amongst many others.
Hypervolt Percussion Therapy
Percussion therapy accelerates and enhances the repair of muscle fibers by providing rapid bursts of pressure in concentrated, short-duration pulses deep into the tissues of the body. This enhances the blood flow to different critical areas, allowing for pain relief and subsequently improving function and range of motion. In addition, this therapy also relaxes thickened connective tissue, helps to break down adhesions and internal scar tissue, provides improved circulation in the veins and lymphatic system, enhances flexibility through gentle stretching, and increases range of movement.
Many patients find traditional massage (by hand) too painful and it may not benefit the hard to reach deeper areas. Percussion therapy is generally not painful, but very effective in providing relief.
Anyone from athletes to office workers can benefit from Percussion therapy as it aids in relieving muscle stiffness, soreness, and pain, improves range of motion, stimulates circulation, and accelerates post-exercise recovery.
Floss Band Fascial Therapy
Fascia is the thin sheath of fibrous tissue enveloping our muscles and some organs, and Fascial Dysfunctions have recently become recogniced as one of the main underlying causes of recurrent musculoskeletal pain. Fascia can contract and fail to release in response to acute trauma or in chronic conditions. This ‘reflex dysfunction’ will force associated muscles to remain in a contracted state often causing chronic and recurring musle spasms. Floss Band Fascial Therapy is mainly used by a specifically trained professional therapist for the treatment of fascial dysfunctions. The treatment is quick, and the results are immediately measurable.
The effects of fascial flossing:
- Fast relocation and disposal of swelling/fluid after a trauma
- Improved range of motion in joints
- Reduced muscle tension
- Faster recovery of injuries
- Pain reduction
- Lymphatic drainage
- Improved tissue perfusion
- Ensures a flexible and healthy fascial network and restores balance in the body
McConnell Institute Taping
McConnell taping techniques are aimed at the management of chronic musculoskeletal conditions. By understanding how postural deficiencies can have detrimental effects on dynamic activities i.e. (walking, sports, gardening, etc.), a trained therapist can use the McConnell taping techniques to unload soft tissue strains, and immediately decrease pain and optimize other treatment effects.
The McConnell Approach is built on the following foundations:
- Understanding the symptoms
- Understanding the causative factors
- Addressing each of these using tape and specific muscle re-training
