Yoga and Pilates have become popular types of exercise in recent years. But what is the difference between them and which type of exercise is right for you..?
Both Yoga and Pilates are low-impact exercises that use body weight resistance and good form to achieve great health benefits both physically and mentally.
The origins of Yoga are unknown, but it has its roots in Buddhism and has been known in many forms for over 3,000 years. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates towards the end of World War 1.
Yoga can be viewed as a form of mind-body exercise, where mindfulness and breathing are just as important as the physical aspect of the exercise. There are many different forms of Yoga varying from the more physically challenging to the more meditative and relaxing. A common theme for many types of Yoga however, is flowing movement and holding of certain poses.
In Pilates there is a strong focus on core stability, where small and precise movements require the stabilizing muscles of the back and core to engage. Pilates can be done on a mat or with specialized equipment.
Research suggest that Yoga and Pilates can be beneficial for the following conditions:
Yoga Pilates
Anxiety & Depression Arthritis
Arthritis Respiratory Conditions
Respiratory Conditions Joint Injuries
High Blood Pressure Back Pain
Chronic Pain Urinary Incontinence
Which is the better exercise…?
Both Yoga and Pilates are great forms of exercise but with a slightly difference focus.
Yoga sometimes require more flexibility and mobility, but this can be developed over time and most postures can be modified for different physical abilities. Finding the right type of Yoga and Instructor for you is key.
Due to its low-impact and more gentle movements, Pilates can be more suitable for older adults or for someone recovering from an injury.
If you would like to improve your flexibility and balance and deepen your mindfulness practice, then Yoga is for you. Pilates may be a better choice if you are looking to improve your posture and core strength or are recovering from a physical injury.
